Here is the instruction on how to get Medicare to pay for hearing aids.

1. The first step is to check whether hearing diagnosis and hearing aids are covered by your current Medicare policy. In general, most Medical policies don’t cover the cost of hearing test and hearing aids.

There are exceptions to this however. Some HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) Medicare does provide coverage on hearing aids. They may not cover the total cost. But they do pay for a portion of the cost of hearing test and the devices.

2. Next consult your audiologist about your hearing loss and ask for a report of audiogram. An audiogram is a report that documents the seriousness of your hearing loss. Your Medicare provider will need this information to determine if you are qualified for the insurance coverage.

Specifically, Part B of your Medicare policy covers the cost related to the purchase of hearing aids.

3. If you are diagnosed with hearing loss, ask your doctor whether the hearing loss is due to accident or aging. If you can prove that your hearing loss is the result of an industrial accident or car accident or you have been working in an unsafe environment that causes your hearing loss, most Medicare policies will cover such situation.

Both the costs of hearing test and hearing aids will be covered by Medicare.

4. If you are so unfortunate that your claim has been rejected by Medicare, don’t feel disappointed as Medicare may change their policy in the future. Medicare may not cover the costs of hearing aids now but they might do that in the future. Therefore, you should keep all the records, documents and medical evaluations related to your case. Don’t throw them all away after you have got declined by Medicare. You might still be able to claim a portion of the cost which you spent a few years back on hearing aids.

5. As mentioned above, Medicare may change their coverage policies every year. Therefore, it’s a good idea to keep track of the policies every year. Try to review it each year to find out if hearing loss is covered in the new policies.

Moreover, research other Medicare providers in your states. Do a comparison of the policies of other Medicare providers with your current policies. You may be able to find some insurance plans that offer lower monthly payments but have more coverage in terms of costs.

6. Other things that you can do to get Medicare to pay for your hearing aids is to write to your local political representatives to ask them to lobby for amendments which will force Medicare to include hearing loss in their coverage plan.
